Psychotherapist and Counselor

As a psychotherapist and counselor in Austin, Texas, I've been doing counseling and/or psychotherapy since 1986 and am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT). This means I am licensed to do counseling and psychotherapy with anyone for any issue.

I see individuals for a wide range of issues including depression, stress, and anxiety. I also see couples for pre-engagement, pre-marital, marital and post-divorce counseling. My areas of specialization are sexual abuse, issues of infidelity/affairs/cheating, ADD/ADHD in marriage, and maintaining a happy, stable marriage after the birth of a child.

The word Mariposa is Spanish for butterfly. I named my practice Mariposa because butterflies are a powerful symbol of change, transformation, and metamorphosis. Going through distinct stages from a being of the ground to a being of the air, the butterfly is a natural metaphor for the transformation of the human spirit.

Through the struggle of change, we as human beings become strong enough to emerge from our safe coccon and courageously face the world as stronger beings. Our psyche longs to be a “butterfly of the air.” In Greek, psyche is the word for both soul and butterfly. The ancient Greeks believed that butterflies were human souls searching for reincarnation.

Transformation is our destiny, our crucible of change leading to new ways of thinking and behaving, adapting to the world around us in ways that set us free. The butterfly is a reminder to make changes when the opportunity arises or when it is demanded of us.

My goal in doing counseling and psychotherapy with clients is to help them make their desired changes and to transform into the best version of themselves and have the most fulfilling and happy life possible.

I also named my practice Mariposa because I have a fascination with butterflies and have had it since I was a child watching them live and work in the hollow of a tree in my great-grandmother's back yard. This was, also, the genesis of my interest in behavioral psychology. And because of this fascinations, my counseling office is filled with butterfly pictures, specimens, ornaments, pottery, figurines etc.

About 8 years ago, I discovered an interesting fact. There is a Native American legend that says, “If you have a secret wish, capture a butterfly and whisper your wish to it. Since butterflies cannot speak, your secret is forever safe in their keeping. Then set the butterfly free to take your secret to the Great Spirit.”

After learning of this folklore, I had an idea for a book, wrote it and then decided I wanted to turn it into a movie script. The premise was based on my experience as a therapist having clients “whisper their secret wishes to me for safe keeping.” Though the goal of a therapist is to help their clients change, the process of trying to achieve this goal, changes the therapist. This is the premise of the book and script. It explores the question, "Who metaphorically is the the butterfly, the client or the therapist?" The book and script were my homage to all the brave clients who have trusted me with their secret inner worlds. I named the book and script The Secret Life of a Butterfly.

So, as the client changes, so does the therapist. I have undying gratitude to all the clients I have counseled over the years who are helping me become the best version of myself. Thanks to all of you.

What can I expect from counseling or therapy with Carolyn Martin?

When your therapy session begins, I will create a space in which it is safe for you to be yourself, to explore, to make mistakes (and have it be OK), and to change. My goal is to nurture my clients while challenging them to find workable solutions to their problems. Through this process I attempt to help clients release their fears and limitations, and encourage them to identify their strengths and talents. From this process comes a dynamic, creative partnership in which clients begin to heal, lessen their own pain and grow.

I want clients to take away from a session the feeling that life doesn't always have to be a struggle, but even when it is a struggle, there is hope. I take great joy and pride in giving this kind of experience to my clients
